Attracting fans to upstart spring football leagues has been an elusive dream for decades. The latest effort, the new United States Football League, is hoping it can catch fans’ attention with some new unconventional twists on the nation’s most popular sport. Are you ready for the 3-point conversion?
That’s just one of several new rules the USFL has implemented in its first season of play this spring. The new league is unaffiliated with another league that famously used the same name from 1983 to 1985. That league—the first professional home of Hall-of-Famers Jim Kelly and Steve Young—may not have lasted long, but it made a mark by using instant replay and 2-point conversions years before the NFL adopted them.
